Belle Plaine, Minnesota

2019

Belle Plaine’s modest 1950s pool did not support the growing population and lacked the excitement of a modern aquatic center. The condition of the existing pool and bathhouse justified a full replacement, so a new facility was designed to better meet the desires of the community.

A primary goal of the project was to construct the new facility without having to lose a swimming season. Waters Edge Aquatic Design was able to work through planning and design in approximately three months. Construction began immediately after bidding and, despite working through a brutal Minnesota winter, the new Belle Plaine Aquatic Center was completed in July of 2019. The community celebrated with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, August 2.

The single basin, multi-use pool design included various amenities and water depths within a single water body. This design approach provided an ease of operation and reduced costs compared to having separate pools. Additionally, the design included space and underground infrastructure to allow for a future spray ground and a speed slide.

The new aquatic center has 7,711square feet of water surface area with brightly colored features selected to enhance each of the different pool areas. A new bathhouse, concession area, and seating areas with deck shades were installed to compliment the water features.

Key water features include:
• Heated water
• Drop slide
• Open body slide
• Family slide
• Toddler slide
• One-meter diving board
• Climbing wall
• Basketball hoop
• Current channel
• Zero-depth entry
• Play structures and sprays
• Water bench with sunshade
• 25-yard lap lanes
