The existing indoor pool at the Southeast Community Center opened in 2009 and later closed for several years due to persistent maintenance issues and broken pipes. With ongoing operational challenges and decreasing use, the City of Kansas City hired Waters Edge Aquatic Design and the project team in 2020 to study existing conditions and develop needs and recommendations for desired elements and improvements.

After the facility assessment and public input, the study determined that the pool’s current condition and character warranted development of a new pool that would serve a greater population and activity base. Flexibility in the pool space was important so various programs could be offered at the community center, such as open swim for kids, lap swimming, aqua fitness, and senior programs. It was also important to the city that the pool was deep enough to offer lifeguard training class.

The four piece mural hanging behind the pool was commissioned specifically for the center and installed in the summer of 2025. By Nashville-based artist Woke3, Water People depicts our deep connection to water, how it moves through our lives beyond just survival. Each piece features individuals the artist met in Kansas City, intimately connecting the piece to the community.
