Operated by the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri, Camp Prairie Schooner offers 176 acres of wilderness in the heart of the Kansas City metro. The camp’s original pool opened in 1962. The modest rectangular pool ranged in depth from 3 to 10 feet and remained in good condition for 50 years. However, it offered limited recreational opportunities, prompting a push to renovate the site.

Thanks to the efforts of more than 100 generous donors, $2.6 million was raised to fund a full renovation of the Camp Prairie Schooner Aquatics Center. The project broke ground in 2018 and was completed in 2019, just in time for the summer swim season. The refreshed design features faux limestone boulders, a large climbing rock, a splash pad, and a bubbler fountain. Accessibility was a key driver for this project, so a zero-depth entry shallow area and stairs were added to the existing pool. The new bathhouse includes heated locker rooms, restrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, storage, and office space.

With quadrupled deck space, an expanded pool layout, and increased storage capacity, the Camp Prairie Schooner Aquatics Center offers Girl Scouts exciting activities such as kayaking and scuba diving training.
