The City of Ankeny outgrew its existing outdoor pool and aimed to build a new water park on a donated plot of land. However, the site had once served as a military munitions plant which meant multiple old fuel tanks were buried deep underground. Even after cleanup, the site was left with soft, unstable soil. Waters Edge Aquatic Design was eager to solve this challenge and worked closely with city staff to develop a unique design that met the specific architectural guidelines the site needed. City staff also wanted unique features and amenities that would set the new water park apart from other regional aquatic facilities. The final design reflected these needs.

Cascade Falls Aquatic Center has a three pool, 21,880 square feet of water surface area, layout including a zero-depth entry recreation pool, a large lazy river with a plunge pool for five water slides, and a competitive eight-lane 25-yard lap pool. Alongside the lap pool is an artificial rockscape diving tower which integrates one-meter and three-meter diving with waterfall features. Also nestled among the three pools is a play structure, rockscapes and waterfalls, multiple waterslides including a signature swirl bowl, various spray and splash features, in-pool shading, and Iowa's first ever FlowRider surf machine. At the time of its opening in 2010, Cascade Falls was the largest publicly owned water park in the Des Moines area.
